The Frisco, Texas native signed with Iowa State as a member of the class of 2016. Iowa State was his choice over other programs, including the ones from Indiana, Iowa Kansas, Nevada, Nevada, and Northwestern. Pro Football Focus recognized Nwangwu a First-Team Freshman All American kick returner in his first season. The running back wasn't able to take part in the 2017 season due to an Achilles tendon tear, which he suffered in the spring after his first season as a freshman. In 2018, he returned and was picked by the coaches as a second-team All Big 12 kick returner. Nwangwu was the primary kick returner for the team and played an even more significant role in 2019.
The running back quit Iowa State as the program's all-time leading kick return average. He averaged 26.8 yards per return throughout his career and returned the ball in 92 times over four seasons. He finished his Iowa State career with 744 yards of rushing in 143 attempts (5.2 yard per carry) and four touchdowns.
